Pilgrim’s Rest Village Tour

Visit the information centre and for get to go on a tour the beautiful village.

The site of the first ever gold rush in Africa in 1873 the outdoor Diggings Museum gives a visual insight into what life was like on the early diggings. The Diggers accommodations, Gold Commissioners Office and the original claims of some of the characters of the era bring the rush to life. A gold panning demonstration in Pilgrims Creek ends the hour-long tour. Tours are available daily from 10am to 3pm and booking is required.

Guided tours of the Village museums, Pilgrims and Sabie News, Central Garage, Dredzen House Museum, Victorian House Museum and Thelwells are available daily.

  • Pilgrims and Sabie News, the first newspaper printed in Pilgrims Rest has a fascinating history involving the Anglo Boer War and the part it played in the minting of the Veld Ponde.
  • Central Garage showcases the history of vehicles in the Lowveld, from ox wagons and carts to the early motor cars and steam sentinel.
  • Victorian House Museum exhibits the Victorian middle-class family dwelling.
  • Dredzen Shop Museum was one of the early trading stores from the 1930- 1950 era and still has many interesting items that were available to the villagers.
  • Thelwells is a tribute to the history of the Sekakuni People of the area, with reference to the Sekakuni Wars.
  • Other Icons in the Village include the Patterson Memorial, St Marys Anglican Church, Lodge Blyde, Methodist Church, The old Post Office and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
  • The Historic cemetery is a fascinating time capsule of the hardships endured in the Rush.
