Description

Bohemian Groove Café in Kaapsehoop is a dream-come-true-place where creativity is expressed in every way. The master of this dream machine is the Fourie family who are happy to call this funky spot their home, restaurant, art gallery, art studio and much more!

Artists Charl and Andrea Fourie, together with their two young kids Chevonne and Emile moved to this mystical mountain in 2011 from Hazyview, with the aim to start living their dream. Together as family they opened their arty restaurant on a shoestring budget. Soon the restaurant moved to the current premises and self- catering accommodation units were created in the old building. The rest is history…this is a lifestyle-art project evolving with whatever comes their way.

Chevonne has completed her degree in Professional Cookery and Patisserie, and is in charge of the kitchen. Charl and Andrea are happily painting away and creating interesting art in the restaurant.

The Restaurant is situated in an old Backpackers building, and is an evolving art project on its own. Due to Covid-19 restrictions and the resulting Lockdown the restaurant had to close doors for a few months, giving the creative forces a chance to stir the pot again. The interior was ripped apart and put together anew, the flower gardens gave way to vegetable gardens, restrooms got a revamp – every aspect of the restaurant got an overhaul. A fresh new approach has been adopted and changes can be seen all around.

Stunning views sweeping over the Blue Swallow Reserve can be enjoyed from the spacious verandah, and meals are served in the garden or on the covered patio, on heavy wooden tables with bulky wrought iron legs. Glühwein heated in old kettles on the coal stove is served in front of roaring fires which are lit in each corner of the restaurant when the mist rolls over the escarpment. During sunny weather sip on a colourful cocktail and enjoy the sun setting over the mountains. The wild horses of Kaapsehoop can be seen from the verandah on sunny days. The village of Kaapsehoop is situated on the escarpment of the Mpumalanga Drakensberg and the weather can change in an instant from sunny days to misty weather.

The Service had to be adapted to a new and faster system – orders are placed at the front counter for all meals and drinks, and the waiters deliver everything to the tables and clear the tables after your meal. We have limited staff, due to the lack of staff availability in the area and restrictions in staff accommodation. This system proves to offer faster service, adding to the visual gastronomical feast when visiting the front counter to order – and we love to chat to our customers!

The Menu consists of wholesome country style home cooked dishes with a German twist due to Andrea’s culinary background and German descent. Bockwurst, thick German lentil soup, homebaked Pretzels and Apfelkuchen feature alongside Lamb Curry, fresh Escarpment Trout and LM- style prawns.
Andrea and daughter Chevonne are the creative forces in the kitchen, together with the dedicated team of local helpers. All the cakes and waffles are baked on site from scratch, filling the front-of-house delicatessen to the brink. Try the home baked Pastéis de Nata or the decadent baked Bread and Butter pudding with homemade custard and vanilla ice cream! An assortment of homemade cakes, bakes and pies can be bought from the deli counter, as well as our freshly baked crusty sourdough bread. The Bohemian Burgers are smashers – rolls are home baked and the patties are made in the kitchen using 100% pure ground beef with various toppings added to create the ultimate burger. Youngsters are entertained by the indulgent Freak shakes and a kiddies menu, with a dress up doll’s house to keep them busy.

Supporting Local is important to Bohemian, so the local beer from Sabie is sold on tap, and the Kaapsehoop Wild Horse Gin served in the restaurant donates 10% of the sales to the Kaapsehoop Heritage Fund, which in turn is the custodian of the wild horses and the conservation area surrounding the village. Fresh and smoked Trout, fruits and veggies are sourced locally, and we support our local senior citizens by selling their jams, gingerbeer and rusks. The vegetable garden surrounds the restaurant and all the edible greens, herbs and flowers are picked from the garden.

The Menu consists of breakfasts, light meals, salads, main courses and desserts. Colourful Cocktails, Illy Coffee and a wine list complement your meals. We are fully licenced and corkage fee is charged for bringing your own.
