When I asked my two sons what their favourite things are about a picnic at the dam, they almost simultaneously responded with “Fishing and eating!”
I got the typical boy answer.
By Christelle Bouwer
As a mom of boys, I have come to know that anything involving an outdoor adventure combined with good food calls for a great family outing. Even more so, enjoying a picnic at the dam fits easily into the budget! Best of all is that the abundance of fishing dams in the Lowveld makes my outdoor adventure-planning super easy.
So, there we were, ready to leave.
The sun peeking over the horizon.
The birds emerging with symphonic song.
The boot packed with rods and reels and wholesome meals.
We were off for our day away adventuring in the Lowveld ♥
Many would agree that fishing is a form of meditation that brings about a sense of calm. There is peace to be found in the sound of the water and the way it glistens in the sun. There is peace to be found in the sound of the wind and the way it cools your warm skin.
There is peace to be found when observing your children emerged in all of nature’s majesty, learning to fish and loving every moment of it, right here in the Lowveld ♥
“Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.
This was the recurring saying during our day spent at one of our favourite Lowveld Dams – The South Dam at Tomjachu Bush Retreat.
The Lowveld hosts a fantastic range of family friendly fishing dams, but what we love about this smaller dam is the fact that:
You can pre-book your picnic spot, which means you can literally have the whole dam to yourself and enjoy an uninterrupted, free roaming, adventure-filled day with your family and friends.
You are almost guaranteed to catch a fish, which makes it so much more exciting for the kids!
This dam is inside a private nature reserve full of hiking trails. You are not bound to the dam and can take your family adventure to the next level.
