Discover a greener Lowveld with Sociably and Green Guru Solutions. Start recycling easily and reduce your environmental impact while inspiring positive change in your community.
Since the 1980’s, the world of recycling and “going green” has undergone remarkable evolution. Back then, recycling was a relatively novel concept, championed by a few environmentally conscious individuals and organisations.
But with so much damage already done by the throwaway generations that came before ours, there is still a pressing need for all people to take up greener habits.
Here is a scary fact:
Most recent statistics revealed that South Africa’s waste management system is in crisis. The country generates 122 million tonnes of waste per year, but only 10% is recycled. The rest is landfilled or dumped illegally, causing environmental and health problems.
This fact alone should be enough to encourage anyone to start making sustainable changes to their lifestyle and reduce their environmental impact.
Getting started with recycling, however, can be challenging for most. It is confusing to figure out what to recycle and how. It is inconvenient having to sort through rubbish. Or maybe there just isn’t enough time or space for you to take on a recycling project.
This is exactly why Sociably recently took the initiative to research simple ways to get started. And let us tell you, it really isn’t all that hard. In fact, it is quite easy to get started; and to get the whole family involved.
Let’s start by introducing Green Guru Solutions, a locally owned business that provides environmentally friendly waste handling solutions to Mbombela and the surrounding areas. They are also the inspiration behind our Sociably Recycling Experiment. Green Guru Solutions offers a range of services to meet the needs of their clients, including residential recycling collections, commercial waste management, and even waste education, believing that waste education is essential for reducing waste.
When reaching out to Green Guru Solutions, owner Stacey, wasted no time sharing her passion and educating us in what we needed to get started. Stacey had a dream of making a tangible and meaningful impact on the environment, and when visiting the Lowveld a few years ago, she noticed the lack of recycling and waste management services in the community. With determination, she took a chance to follow her dreams. Armed with a burning desire to make a difference, she founded Green Guru Solutions, a true beacon of hope for a greener future.
With the guidance of Stacey and the Green Guru Solutions team, Sociably has put together the following guidelines that should help you get started on your recycling journey.
What you will need:
A rubbish bin & bag – Yes, it really is that simple.
Signing up with Green Guru Solutions means that you will receive a weekly recycling bag for all of your recyclables to go into, and all you need to do is leave it on the curb for them to collect and sort on your behalf. In the spirit of recycling, however, Sociably travelled to the nearest Westpack and found 4 very convenient medium sized bins to ensure hassle-free sorting.
Drop-off Sites:
Not signing up with Green Guru Solutions does not mean you can’t join in on the recycling fun, you can drop your recycling goods off at their premises in Drum Rock; or follow the link below to find a waste management site near you: https://sstafrica.org.za/my_map/index_waste_recycle.html.

General Information & Tips:
Reducing is always better than reusing – There are many ways to shop more sustainably at the grocery store. You can individually pick fruit and vegetables, which reduces packaging waste. Some stores, like Food Lovers Market, allow you to bring your own containers for produce and bulk purchases. You can also choose dry goods in recyclable packaging and bring your own shopping bags. When buying meat, support a local butcher that will allow you to provide your own container.
By making small changes in our shopping habits, we can encourage stores to stock more sustainable options.
One person’s actions may seem insignificant, but they can start a chain reaction that leads to positive change. Just like a single drop of water can make a ripple in the ocean, one person’s actions can have a ripple effect that spreads throughout the community. We are all interconnected and when we set an example for our neighbours and get our friends and family involved in conversations of this kind, we are inspiring others to do the same.
The Sociably team is often amazed by the Lowveld’s community spirit. We see how people from all walks of life come together for a cause, regardless of their differences in background, character, race, or religion. We believe that when we work together, we can create a more sustainable future for our planet.
