Soul Soothed with Secret Sunrise

An experience of true authenticity

Have you heard about the global movement called Secret Sunrise? Have you seen the gatherings in public spaces, people grooving or working out in silence, all with matching headphones? Like they’re in their own little world, oblivious to the rest of us?

It does seem somewhat secretive, doesn’t it? Sociably was dying to know what these secret gatherings were all about, so we did some research on Google. But Google was like, ‘shhh, it’s a secret!’ So, we were left to our own devices to figure it out.

All jokes aside, here is what google really said:

Secret Sunrise is a silent dance and meditation community that originated right here in sunny South Africa; and since its origin in 2016 has grown with thousands of fans spreading across the world. It is said to hold wonderful benefits such as:

Improved mental and physical health
Reduced stress and anxiety
Increased self-confidence and self-esteem
Enhanced creativity and imagination
Deeper connection with oneself and others
Stronger sense of community (Sociably’s favourite one 😊)

Upon arrival at a Secret Sunrise event, you would be handed a headset that will connect you to the music, meticulously put together for the occasion. The accredited facilitators of Secret Sunrise guide you through a series of dance, movement and meditation, all meant to help you connect with your body, mind and spirit.

Once our research was complete, we could not help but set out to see if our findings would align with what actually happens at these events. This past Saturday, the Secret Sunrise Community gathered in the Lowveld Botanical Gardens to celebrate Spring, and guess what…

Google was right! When we arrived, we found the morning bright and the birds in song. It was a true Spring sight. We were where we belong.

Out in the open, the air crisp and cool.

The atmosphere vibrant, engulfed in nature’s pull.

We arrived slightly late but welcomed, nonetheless.

We found warm smiles and open hearts from joyful facilitators, Tash and Kez.

We were ready to boogie. We were ready to flow.

We were ready to breathe and then to let go.

Closing our eyes and forgetting opinions, we boogied away letting go of restrictions.

We forgot our expectations of how this should look. We just moved and we listened; and our bodies just shook.

The music was flowing, somehow perfectly chosen. Was it just me, or had my playlist been stolen?

Was it coincidence or fated to be? It did not matter because it made me feel free.

Then we slowed, breathed and moved onto our mats.

Here stretched and made friends with our inner acrobats.

A voice in our ears, gently guiding the way,

Reminding us of our interconnectedness, as we ended our day.

A connection between humans. A connection with earth.

A connection with a higher power. A connection predating birth.

A connection with Source, the universe, with God.

The name does not matter, although it sounds odd.

It is one and the same, from one force we all came.

We are authentically expressing, a divine blessing.
