The Science of Sound

The Science of Sound
As our regular readers know, the Sociably crew loves a good holistic approach to life. In fact, we love investigating all sorts of Wellness modalities.

For our latest holistic adventure, we decided to invest in a one-on-one session with Sound Healer, Rona Joubert (aka BluePhoenix). Before I share my own personal experience, let me share some science behind the term ‘sound therapy’.

Sound therapy has been used for centuries as a form of healing and relaxation, and one popular tool in this practice is the singing bowl, of which Rona has a whole collection. These bowls are often made of metal or crystal and are known for emitting soothing sounds when struck or rubbed with a mallet.

The premise behind sound therapy is that sound frequencies can impact our bodies on a cellular level, promoting healing and overall well-being. When a singing bowl is played, it emits frequencies that reach our cells, tissues, and organs, creating a harmonic resonance within the body. This resonance can help to balance the body’s energy centers and can also reduce stress, anxiety, and even physical pain.

Scientifically, sound therapy is based on the concept of entrainment, which is the synchronization of two or more rhythmic cycles. When a singing bowl emits a specific frequency, our brainwaves and body rhythms tend to synchronize with that frequency, promoting a state of relaxation and harmony.

If you are interested in learning more about sound therapy and the healing properties of singing bowls, there are several resources you can explore. One recommended book is “The Healing Power of Sound” by Mitchell L. Gaynor, M.D., which delves into the science behind sound therapy and its impact on health.

Now, back to the experience.

After weeks of feeling like a hamster on a wheel, I was finally ready for sound therapy. Rona graciously allowed my well-trained and cat-friendly puppy to join, making this session a rare treat for both human-mom and canine-kid. The cozy studio, bathed in rainbow hues, felt like a secret sanctuary. I bombarded Rona with questions, which she answered with saint-like patience. As the session began, a wave of tranquility washed over me, accompanied by a symphony of sounds. My body tingled with delight as I slipped into a state of deep relaxation. For the first time in weeks, I could literally just take a damn nap. Even my puppy found her zen. It was pure bliss.

The Sociably crew just loves to unwind somewhere in the Lowveld. But what happens when we combine our love for unwinding with a specific soothing sound followed by a glorious nap?

Ultimately, the deeply relaxing nature of sound therapy can lead to a sense of calm and rejuvenation, as experienced by myself and many who partake in sessions like this. If you are trying to take a more holistic approach to healing, or you just need a break, we would highly recommend a sound therapy session.
