Situated in the heart of the Spekboom River Valley within the Mount Anderson Wildlife & Water Catchment Reserve, Rivendell Trout Estate feels like stepping into a scene from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. The journey itself was breathtaking, with the winding road flanked by towering, rugged cliffs. It set the stage for what turned out to be an unforgettable girls’ night away in Buckleberry Cottage.
Arrival and First Impressions
As we arrived, the air was filled with excitement and the promise of a magical retreat. The Buckleberry Cottage welcomed us with its cozy fireplace and inviting atmosphere. We quickly settled in, taking in the beautiful surroundings and the serene sound of the Spekboom River flowing nearby.
Dinner, Laughter, and Unforgettable Moments
Our first night was nothing short of spectacular. We cooked a delicious dinner, shared stories, and painted portraits of each other, resulting in fits of laughter that left us breathless. The comfort of the beds, complete with the coziest blankets and electric heaters, ensured we ended our night in warmth and luxury.
Morning Bliss by the River
Waking up to the sounds of nature was a highlight of our stay. We sipped our morning coffee by the river, watching duikers wander through the bush and listening to the vibrant birdlife. Angus, the charming owner of Rivendell, joined us and shared his morning ritual of feeding the trout, offering us a glimpse into the life of this enchanting estate.
Fly Fishing Fun
Despite our inexperience, we were determined to try fly fishing. Angus, with his endless patience and expertise, taught us the basics and even rigged up a rod for us. The water was so clear we could see the fish swimming around the fly. Although my first catch was a rock, the thrill of the experience and the pristine conditions made it an unforgettable adventure. Rivendell operates on a catch-and-release policy, but each unit allows guests to keep one fish per stay, making for a perfect balance of sport and sustainability.
Exploring the Estate
Angus treated us to a tour of the property in his trusty Land Cruiser. The drive was awe-inspiring, showcasing a variety of biomes from highveld and bushveld to stunning plateaus. We spotted numerous buck and antelope, with Angus recounting tales of leopard sightings and the rich wildlife that calls Rivendell home. The property is dotted with historical Bakoni stone structures, adding a sense of timelessness to the landscape.
Perfect for Families and Nature Lovers
Rivendell Trout Estate is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and families alike. With its safe and serene environment, there’s plenty to keep kids entertained and adults relaxed. Each unit comes with a “Game Box” filled with various puzzles and board games, ensuring endless fun for everyone. Exceptional Hospitality
The highlight of our stay was the exceptional hospitality of Angus and Jenny. Their warmth and attentiveness made us feel right at home, even after just one night. Their dedication to maintaining the pristine environment and ensuring guests have a memorable experience truly sets Rivendell apart.
