How amazing is it to be living, loving and laughing together in the breathtaking Lowveld?

By Christelle Bouwer

If you are nature-loving, pathfinding, together-growing lovers like my husband and I, then there is no better way to spend time together, than a day away adventuring in the Lowveld.

With a cup of coffee, a back seat filled with snacks and ‘Adore you’ by Miley Cyrus playing in the background, we made our way onto the winding roads that lead to waterfalls and wonderful views!

There is a special kind of magic in a waterfall. A gush of ageless water surrounded by carpets of moss, rainbow reflections and soft mist breezes. There is magic in the way the tiniest droplets land effortlessly on your skin as though they are fragments of blessings from long ago drifting your way and finding a place to grow.

This is exactly what you can expect when visiting one of the many waterfalls of the Lowveld. We decided on the Horseshoe Falls as our waterfall destination for the day.

What we love about this cascade type falls is the fact that there is more here than just viewing a waterfall. You can also arrange to have a picnic and even swim in the refreshing pools. The area offers endless beauty and tranquillity which is why we return to it time and time again.

After a few hours of exploring, we made our way onto some more winding roads that lead to one of our all-time favourite towns – Pilgrims Rest. When I come here, I recall my two favourite childhood memories.

  1. The spooky Robber’s grave and the ghost that may or may not appear when you visit it.
  2. The bags of Peanut Brittle we bought, because homemade doesn’t come any better.

Pilgrims Rest was declared a National Monument in 1986 and grants one the perfect view into the Gold Mining history of the Lowveld.

We ended our stay sipping homemade ginger beer, breathing in golden air and admiring the late Victorian architecture. The day was fast coming to an end when we decided to make one last stop. We took a winding road into a darkening forest, where we thought we might see bigfoot, but found a spectacular sunset instead.

We love the Lowveld.
