Yup, it’s that time of the year. Even if the middle of the day is sunny and mild, we have dug out the winter attire from the back of the closets. In fact, by now, the fans are moved aside (you’re welcome Eskom) and the winter blankets are laying thick and fluffy on the beds. As the temperatures drop and the snot-count increases, all we want to do is retreat indoors with our tissues and cough meds constantly on standby.
Fear not, dear friends, there is still hope because Sociably has got you covered this winter with three simple and all-natural snot-survival tips. These tips will help you make it through the cold season with your nose and your sanity firmly intact.
Dose yourself with this brew to fight colds & flu
This quick and easy-to-make brew is not only packed with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but it will also cleanse your system, improve digestion, and give your immune system a wonderful boost.
Recipe:
24 g fresh ginger, peeled and grated (equivalent to 3 large ginger thumbs)
60ml lemon juice (option to add some lemon slices for the pot)
7.5 ml ground turmeric
7.5 ml ground cinnamon (option to add a cinnamon stick to the pot)
1.5 L water
Method:
Add all ingredients to a pot and bring to a boil.
Lower the heat and allow it to slowly simmer for 5min.
Strain the liquid into a jug and serve as a tea, adding honey to taste.
You can store the pulp in your fridge for a day or two. This will make a delicious tea if you boil it up with some water and add a few rooibos teabags.
Eat plenty of these super immune booster foods
The Immune system is the body’s way of protecting itself from infections and diseases. It fights not only the usual colds and flu viruses but also more serious conditions like cancer. It is important to know that our immune systems cannot maintain itself, we need to boost it!
When we think of boosting the immune system, the most obvious conclusion would be to go to the pharmacy and spend way too much money on a range of supplements, however, the best way to get the supplements your body needs, will always be the natural way.
Here is a list of 12 super immune booster foods that are easy to come by and easy to incorporate into meals, snacks and even drinks (like our homemade brew 😊)
Broccoli, Spinach, Sweet Potato, Ginger and Turmeric are all excellent sources of vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin C, Vitamin A and antioxidants. They help to boost the immune system and reduce inflammation in the body.
Garlic is known for its ability to improve heart health. It is also an excellent immune booster thanks to a high concentration of sulfur-containing compounds, such as allicin which helps the body resist and destroy infection.
Pawpaw contains a high amount of Vitamin C and antioxidants. It helps boost the immune system function and protects cells from damage.
Citrus and Blueberries are high in Vitamin C and a great source for antioxidants. It also helps neutralize harmful free radicals that can damage cells.
Kiwi is an excellent source of Vitamin C, Vitamin K and antioxidants. It helps boost the immune system and heart health.
Almonds and Sunflower Seeds are high in Vitamin E which is essential for a healthy immune system. They are also a great source of healthy fats, protein, and antioxidants, which helps protect cells from damage.
Keep moving
No matter what your preferred workout method is, exercise and physical activity can help strengthen the immune system. Movement helps to improve circulation in the body, which can promote the flow of lymphatic fluid and help the body get rid of toxins and waste, making it better equipped to fight off infections.
Exercise can also help reduce stress and promotes better sleep, both of which can be beneficial for overall health and immune function. Keep in mind that it is also important to rest. If the snot is overwhelming you, it is better to not overexert and exhaust yourself because this could, in turn, weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to illness.
If this is the case and rest is your fate, try a “standing forward fold”. This yoga pose is a wonderful way to decongest your sinuses. It allows gravity to help drain the sinuses. It also opens up the lungs, releases tension and improves circulation.
Remember, it is always better to seek medical attention from a licensed healthcare provider when you are feeling ill, but by incorporating these immune booster tips into your daily routine, you can help lower your risk of getting sick and stay healthy throughout the cold season.
If all else fails, a piping hot bowl of chicken soup and a marathon of your favourite movies under a layer of soothing warm blankets, can do wonders for your mood.
